This year forced a decade of e-commerce adoption into nine months. We have helped a dozen Egyptian retailers move from a shop and a phone number to something resembling an online business, and the pattern of what breaks is remarkably consistent. It is almost never the website.

In a pivot to e-commerce, the store is the easy part

Standing up a functioning storefront is a matter of weeks now. What actually determines whether the pivot works is everything behind it: whether stock levels are accurate, whether someone owns the packing process, whether the delivery partner can reach the governorates your customers live in, and whether returns have a written policy that a customer service agent can follow at nine in the evening.

The single most common failure we have seen this year is selling something the shop no longer has. It costs the order, the customer and usually a review. If your inventory lives in a notebook, fix that before you spend anything on advertising.

Cash on delivery is a business model, not a payment option

The majority of orders our clients take are still cash on delivery, and that changes the math of everything. Failed delivery rates run high, and each failure costs you the shipping both ways plus the tied up stock. The counters that work are simple and unglamorous: confirm every order by phone or WhatsApp before dispatch, give an accurate delivery window rather than an optimistic one, and offer a small discount for prepayment so the customers who are willing to pay online have a reason to.

Where the marketing budget should go

Not into acquisition first. Into the parts of the journey where money is already leaking. A product page with real photography, honest sizing and clear delivery information converts better than any ad you can buy. A WhatsApp number that answers within minutes closes orders that a contact form loses entirely. Retargeting the people who already reached checkout costs a fraction of finding new ones.

Retail is not going back to the way it was in February, and the businesses treating this as a permanent shift rather than an emergency measure are the ones pulling ahead. If you are building that foundation now, our website and app development team builds stores designed around delivery reality in this market rather than a template imported from somewhere else.
