How we built STEP a brand system out of its own pattern pieces

A school uniform manufacturer needed one identity that reads as garment before it reads as logo, loud enough to survive a crowded shelf and structured enough to run stationery, a brochure and a company profile.

The Brief

School uniform brand identity design: the brief

STEP manufactures school uniforms. It sells to two audiences at once. Parents choose what their children wear. School boards approve the supplier. A logo alone answers neither question.

The brand needed to say garment before it said company. Uniform labels print small. The mark had to stay legible at that size, every time.

The identity also had to carry range. STEP wanted a full 2026 system, not a single mark: stationery, a brochure, a company profile, all from one source.

A uniform brand competes on a crowded shelf next to other suppliers. It had to read as confident from a meter away, and hold up under a parent's close look.

Two very different readers had to trust the same mark on the same morning: a school procurement officer, and a parent packing a bag. The identity had to earn trust from both without contradicting itself in front of either one.

The Build

What we built

The letters of the mark read as pattern pieces. Dashed stitch lines run through them. The identity says garment before it says brand.

Turquoise, yellow, pink and cream keep it loud on a shelf. The palette had to compete with every other supplier in the same aisle.

The 2026 system runs to a full guidelines book, a color book, a pattern library and a logo suite.

Arabic and Latin type sit at the same weight throughout. Neither script reads as the afterthought, on a label or on a company profile cover.

Stationery, the brochure and the company profile all draw from the same pattern set. A school board reviewing a proposal meets the same visual language a parent sees on a label. Neither reader has to work to recognize the other document as the same brand. That consistency is the whole point of a guidelines book.

The Details

One pattern set, every application

The pattern library is what makes the system scale. A new product line does not need a designer starting from a blank page.

A new document type draws from the same library too. That is what keeps a growing catalog of collateral looking like one brand.

The guidelines book fixes how the pattern behaves at different sizes. A label at ten millimeters and a banner at ten meters follow the same rules.

That discipline is what lets STEP add a new uniform line without commissioning a new identity for it. The system was built to outlast this one delivery. A pattern library only pays off if it keeps getting used long after the first invoice is settled. STEP now owns that asset outright, not just the delivered files.

This page documents the build: what was designed, developed and shipped. We publish performance figures only for engagements where we hold the measurement, which is why this entry reports scope instead of statistics. The programs we can measure are on the success stories page.
