The cart is the last step before checkout, so small details matter here. Lumina lets you choose how the cart opens, show how close a shopper is to free shipping, offer gift wrap, collect order notes and suggest extra products. Most settings live in one place.

Open the editor (Online Store > Themes > Customize), click the paintbrush for Theme settings and select Theme settings > Cart.

Choose how the cart opens

Theme settings > Cart > Cart type:

  1. Drawer: a panel slides in from the side when a product is added. Shoppers never leave the page. Best for most stores.
  2. Page: shoppers go to a full cart page.
  3. Popup notification: a small message confirms the item was added, with buttons to view the cart or check out.

Related sections:

  • The Cart drawer section has its own Color scheme, a Recommendations heading and Links in the empty cart, which is a menu shown when the cart has nothing in it.
  • The cart page uses the Cart items section: Color scheme, Recommendations heading, Show trust notes (short reassurance lines such as secure checkout and easy returns), Show payment icons and padding.

Free shipping bar

A progress bar encourages shoppers to add a little more to reach free shipping.

  1. Open Theme settings > Cart.
  2. Enter a number in Free shipping threshold. Use your store currency, for example 100.
  3. Make sure your shipping rates really are free at that amount. In Shopify admin, open Settings > Shipping and delivery and add a free rate for orders over that value.
  4. Save. The bar appears in the cart, saying how much more the shopper needs to spend. When they reach the amount, it says their order qualifies for free shipping.

Set it to 0 to hide the bar.

Good to know

  • The bar uses the shopper's currency. If you sell in several currencies, Lumina converts your threshold with Shopify's live rate.
  • The bar is a promise. It does not change your shipping rates, so the rates in Shopify must match the number you enter.

Discount codes

Turn on Show discount code field to let shoppers enter a code in the cart. Automatic discounts and codes are shown on the cart lines and in the totals. Turn the field off if you do not use codes, so shoppers do not leave to hunt for one.

If a code is valid but does not apply to the items in the cart, the shopper sees a message that explains it.

Gift wrap product

Offer gift wrapping as a paid add on.

  1. In Shopify admin, add a new product called Gift wrapping. Set the price you want to charge, and make sure it is available on the Online Store sales channel.
  2. Give it a plain look. A simple photo is fine. You can keep it out of your collections.
  3. In Theme settings > Cart, choose the product in Gift wrap product.
  4. Shoppers now see an option to add gift wrapping for the price you set. It appears as a line in the cart and on the order, so your team knows to wrap it.

Order notes

Enable order notes adds a box where shoppers can write special instructions. Use it for delivery notes, gift messages and size questions. The note appears on the order in your admin.

For notes tied to one product, such as an engraving, use a Custom field block on the product page instead. See Product page.

Shipping estimator

Show shipping estimator on the cart page adds a small calculator on the cart page. Shoppers choose their country, state or province and postal code, and see the shipping rates that apply. It uses your Shopify shipping rates, so the figures match checkout.

Terms and conditions

  1. Create a page with your terms in Online Store > Pages.
  2. Turn on Require terms agreement before checkout.
  3. Choose the page in Terms page.

Shoppers must tick the box before the checkout button works. If they try without it, they see a message asking them to accept.

Order on WhatsApp

Show "Order on WhatsApp" in the cart adds a button that opens WhatsApp with a message listing the items in the cart. It is meant for stores that finish orders by chat, such as cash on delivery or custom orders. It needs your number in Theme settings > Chat and contact > WhatsApp number. See WhatsApp and chat.

Recommendations in the cart

Under Recommendations in the cart:

  1. Show recommendations: show a short list of products shoppers might add.
  2. Fallback collection: complementary products you set up in the Search & Discovery app come first. This collection fills the remaining spots.
  3. Number of products: 1 to 6.

The Recommendations heading in the Cart drawer and Cart items sections sets the title above them.

Checkout buttons

Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay and other accelerated checkout buttons appear in the cart when they are available to your store. You turn payment methods on in Shopify admin under Settings > Payments.

Good to know

  • Test the cart on a phone. Most orders now come from phones.
  • Choose a drawer if your shoppers usually buy several items, and a page if you want a longer cart with recommendations.
  • Subscription items and items with custom fields show their details under the item name in the cart.
  • Prices in the cart and at checkout show the currency code, for example $1.00 USD.
  • Cart text, such as "Add a note" or "Check out", can be changed in the language settings. See Languages and right-to-left.
