Almost every account we manage has seen organic reach fall this year, some by half. It is not your imagination and it is not a punishment. There is simply far more content chasing the same number of minutes, and the feed has not been chronological for years. The question is what still moves, and the answer has changed.

Stop optimizing Instagram engagement for likes

Instagram has been testing hidden like counts in several markets, which should tell you where this is going. Likes were always the cheapest signal a person could give. Saves, shares and direct message forwards cost more effort and tell the platform far more about whether the content was worth someone’s time. In our accounts, posts with a high save rate keep getting served days after publication, while high like posts die within hours. Judge a post a week after publication rather than an hour after, because the two rankings rarely match.

Practically, that means making content worth keeping. Checklists, how to carousels, price comparisons, before and after results, and anything a person might want to find again next week.

Stories are doing the heavy lifting

Feed posts reach a fraction of your followers. Stories reach the people who actually care, and they carry the interaction tools that generate the most useful signal: polls, questions, quizzes and sliders. The accounts holding their engagement this year are the ones posting three to five stories a day and treating the feed as a portfolio rather than a broadcast.

Three habits that reliably help

First, reply to every comment within an hour of posting, because early interaction shapes how far the post travels. Second, spend twenty minutes a day commenting genuinely on accounts your target customer follows, which is unglamorous and works. Third, post consistently at the same times so your audience develops a habit, and give any change at least four weeks before you judge it.

Chasing engagement pods, buying followers or spamming thirty hashtags will not save an account. Content people want to save will. If you want the full framework we use to plan a month of content that earns its reach, our social media strategy and management team runs it with every client.
